Description of Monte Sano Trails

Just starting out? Looking for easy riding on trails that the whole family can enjoy?

• Monte Sano State Park: (PDF)
  • Family Biking Trail: ~4.9 mile long single track on top on the mountain.
  • Gravel road: ~1.5 mile out and back. You can even continue past the gravel on flat double track to the overlook at O'Shaugnessee Point.

• Hayes Nature Preserve (link to briartech.com)
  • Near Hampton Cove, and the Flint River there are miles of flat smooth dirt trails including board walks.

• Wheeler Wildlife Refuge: (GIF image)
  • There are many miles of dirt roads along the Tennessee River running through Wheeler Wild Life Refuge. 12, 7.8, and 5 mile loops available.
  • Located off of Joly B Rd. at the end of County Line Rd. on the border of Limestone and Madison counties. Exit off I-565 at Wal-Triana. Follow South until you hit County Line Rd. Dirt parking lot is about a mile down on the gravel section of Joly B. Watch for closed gates, just go around them.
  • NOTE: Hunting is allowed on the Refuge. Roads can be open to car traffic.

  • Basically anything off the plateau
  • Only 1 mile long and with easy bail points try the North Plateau Loop/Fire Tower Trail circuit.

• Monte Sano Preserve (Land Trust): (PDF)
• • West side of Monte Sano: trails ranging for all abilities
• Wade Mountain (Land Trust): (link to land trust)
• • Good mixture of technical rock gardens, rock features, and smooth single track.
  • Northwest part of town.
• Blevins Gap (Land Trust): (JPG Image)
• • Good mixture of very technical rock gardens, rock features, and smooth single track.
  • Extremely difficult/Hike-a bike section with trail going over cliff drops of several feet. This section is not recommended. See map.
  • Bypass around above is to local neighborhood
  • Southeast part of town.
• Pine Torch Trail (Bankhead National Forest) (link to Alabama Mountain Biking)
• • Located 60 miles west of Huntsville
  • Shared with horses and hikers.

  • ATV trails. 11 & 5 mile loops
  • Somewhat rocky in places, but also lots of sand. Big bermed corners and lots of straight-aways
  • Very fast and open, can be dangerous with two-way traffic. BE CAREFUL around blind corners!

Expert Trails

• Hurricane Ridge Park: (link to Hurricane Creek Park)
• • Freeriding / downhiller mecca for Alabama.
  • These are expert only trails. 4+ miles, plus more to come.
  • Exit 318 off I-65, South on US-31 for a mile. Look for gravel lot on left.
